What is OBJ File Format?

OBJ is a file format used for storing 3D object data. It was developed by Wavefront Technologies in 1990 and is supported by many different 3D software programs today. OBJ files contain information about the geometry of an object, including its vertices, normals, textures and material attributes. They can also store animation data and other object parameters.

More Information

As the name implies, OBJ files are commonly used to create 3D models for use in 3D printing, virtual reality, and computer games due to their ability to store models, and they are often used as a part of the process when creating 3D graphics for films and games.

OBJ files can be opened and edited with various 3D modeling software programs, including Autodesk Maya, Autodesk 3ds Max and Blender. These programs allow the user to manipulate the geometries of the 3D model stored in the OBJ file.

How to Open and Edit OBJ File?

Step 1: Download and install 3D modeling software that supports OBJ files, such as Autodesk Maya, Autodesk 3ds Max or Blender.

Step 2: Open the OBJ file in the 3D modeling software.

Step 3: Select the objects or parts of the 3D model that you want to edit or alter.

Step 4: Make any changes you want to the selected objects or parts of the model.

Step 5: Save the changes to the OBJ file.

How to Convert OBJ File?

OBJ files can be converted to other 3D file formats, such as:

  • FBX File: Film Box
  • STL File: Stereolithography
  • DAE File: Collada

In addition, it is possible to convert the OBJ files to popular image formats such as PNGs, JPGs and TGAs by opening them in a 3D modeling program and then choosing Export or Save As from the menu. You will need to select the desired file format and then click OK to save the data file.

What is .OBJ File?

OBJ files (Relocatable Object Code) are on the whole a type of file commonly used to store 3D model data. A lot of 3D models are commonly stored in OBJ format, which is commonly used in 3D printing, video games, and computer assisted design.

It consists of raw binary data that contains the necessary information in order to create an object comprising mesh geometry, texture mapping, lighting, and shading, such as what exactly the object should look like.

More Information:

OBJ files can be opened and edited using various software programs, including those that work with vector graphics, 3D modelling and animation, CAD/CAM, and others. Depending on the software used, the OBJ file may need to be imported or exported.

Moreover, some software programs allow users to modify directly the contents of an OBJ file, but this should be avoided in most cases.

How to Open and Edit OBJ File?

To open and edit an OBJ file, you will need a software program capable of working with 3D models. Some popular options include Blender, MeshLab, Autodesk Maya, and Pixologic ZBrush.

Once you have obtained and installed the necessary software, follow these steps to open and edit an OBJ file:

Step 1: Launch the software you wish to use to open and edit the OBJ file.

Step 2: Select Open or Import from the main menu.

Step 3: Locate and select the OBJ file you wish to open.

Step 4: Choose how you want the file to be imported.

Step 5: Use the available tools to view, manipulate, and edit the contents of your OBJ file.

How to Convert OBJ File?

OBJ files can be converted to many other formats, including:

  • STL File: Stereolithography
  • FBX File: Filmbox
  • 3DS File: 3D Studio Max
  • PLY File: Stanford Triangle Format

To convert an OBJ file to another format, you will need a software program capable of importing and exporting 3D models. Popular options include Blender, MeshLab, Autodesk Maya, and Pixologic ZBrush.

Once you have obtained and installed the necessary software, follow these steps to convert an OBJ file:

Step 1: Launch the software you wish to use to convert the OBJ file.

Step 2: Select Open or Import from the main menu.

Step 3: Locate and select the OBJ file you wish to convert.

Step 4: Choose the output format you want to convert the OBJ file to.

Step 5: Save your converted file.
